About ABB

Inspired by the 1996 British movie Brassed Off, the band was originally formed by members of the Austin Civic Wind Ensemble as the Austin Wonder Brass in 2005. In 2011 the name was changed to Austin Brass Band.

Our Conductor

Our conductor is John Caputo. He is a former member of the USAF Band of the West at Lackland Airforce Base in San Antonio where he played euphonium with the Concert Band and trombone with the Jazz Ensemble. He currently teaches private lessons. He earned a Music Education degree from Duquesne University where he studied euphonium with Brian Bowman. He earned a Masters degree in Euphonium Performance from The University of Michigan where he studied with Mark Fisher and Fritz Kaenzig. His experience with British style brass bands includes the Georgia Brass Band.

See a documentary on YouTube about the Grimethorpe Colliery Band. This is the real story behind the movie Brassed Off.

As far as we know, there are only four British style brass bands in Texas. The others are in Houston and North Texas, with the newest one in San Antonio.
